Undiknas Tourism Destination Students Visit Tenganan Tourism Village and Virgin Beach Karangasem for Field Practicum
Karangasem, May 22, 2025 – Students from the Tourism Destination Study Program at Universitas Pendidikan Nasional (Undiknas) recently conducted a field practicum as part of their experiential learning curriculum. The activity took place in Tenganan Pegringsingan Tourism Village and Virgin Beach in Karangasem, with students accompanied by faculty advisors from the study program.
The primary objective of this practicum was to provide students with firsthand understanding of cultural and nature-based tourism management, as well as to analyze the potential and challenges in developing sustainable tourism destinations at the local level.
Tenganan Village, known as one of the Bali Aga villages that still preserves its traditional ways and local wisdom, served as the ideal location for observing culture-based tourism. Students had the opportunity to closely observe the local community’s way of life, village governance systems, and cultural attractions such as the iconic Gringsing weaving craft.
Meanwhile, the visit to Virgin Beach — an exotic hidden beach in Karangasem — served as a learning moment focused on the potential of underdeveloped natural tourism destinations. At this location, students conducted observations on available facilities, accessibility, and the readiness of the destination to support environmentally-conscious tourism development.
Through this activity, students not only learned how to map the potential of tourism destinations but also gained insights into the importance of balancing cultural preservation with tourism development. The Tourism Destination Study Program at Undiknas continues to emphasize a holistic approach to tourism studies, equipping students not only with theoretical knowledge but also with deep field understanding—aligned with Undiknas’ vision as a techno research-preneur campus responsive to industry and community needs.
This practicum is expected to foster students’ sensitivity to the dynamics of local tourism while encouraging them to contribute to the development of leading destinations across Indonesia.
